introductions of the people that are with us here my colleague and I who are

the enrollment advisors as well as our program director and one of our students

who has attended the programs here and is sharing some of his time with us

today you’re going to learn about the civil engineering program the curriculum

specifically the construction engineering and management and of course
02:10
the student experience and then we’ll have a quick Q&A; at the end my name as I

introduce our program director dr. Guy Riefler have him share a little bit of

his educational background with you all dr. reefer go ahead

hi so I got my PhD at the University of Connecticut but I didn’t go right
03:13
through school without working I spent three years as an environmental
03:16
consulting firm in Arlington Virginia before going back for my PhD I then
03:23
joined Ohio University a civil engineering department and I’ve been
03:27
there ever since we teach mostly face-to-face classes
03:31
um but over the last I don’t I guess five years now I’ve been running this
03:38
online program I’ve really enjoyed the mixture between face-to-face and online
03:42
classes I’ve got to do here um I’ve had some experience internationally I let in
03:49
engineers Without Borders group to Ghana some years back I’m also involved with
03:54
students with environmental design competitions um I I do a combination of
04:01
research and teaching like like most faculty but I do highly value the
04:07
teaching side of my my work and I’ve won some awards as a result of that and um
04:14
while I was working at environ I earned a PE in environmental engineering
04:22
well actually I took the PE test shortly after leaving there but though I am a
04:27
practicing engineer in the state of Ohio

thanks dr. Riefler so everyone this is indicative of the caliber of individual

that you will be learning from here at Ohio University dr. Riefler and all of
04:43
our other professors are very well-versed in their subject matter and
04:47
are really experts in their fields so let’s jump right into a few of the
04:54
details for the online civil engineering program as you’ll be able to see of
04:59
course this is an advanced program for civil engineers who are currently
05:03
employed all of the courses are 100% online and indeed are taught by the same
05:09
professors that teach the campus courses it’s 32 semester credit hours total it
05:15
can become as little as 20 months or so just under
05:19
two years we can talk about what your options are for completion based on the
05:24
time that you have available to be able to dedicate to your studies as you can
05:29
see of course there are four concentrations that we have there is no
05:33
thesis required and here you’ll see the tuition there is just a slight variable
05:39
for us between in-state residents of Ohio and out-of-state residents that do
05:44
not live in Ohio so nineteen dollars difference per credit hour we have three
05:49
starts each year spring summer and fall four deadlines and dates something a
05:56
little bit more on informational reach out to us we’ll be happy to give you
06:01
those exact deadlines and then of course there is a flexibility within our
06:05
program to replace up to two of the classes with classes from outside of
06:10
your concentration and again reach out to Trish and I were happy to address
06:14
those in a little bit more of a formal manner for you and as you’ll be able to
06:20
see we are indeed accredited by the Higher Learning Commission and we are a
06:26
research facility and as you’ll see there of course no GRE is required for
06:31
qualified applicants we can get more into that on an individual basis of
06:36
course with Trish or I as to what constitutes a qualified applicant so
06:44
here you’re going to see for the next three slides information on the
06:48
curriculum for each one of our specializations the environmental as
06:52
you’ll see here the transportation and the structural we’ll follow the thing to
06:57
point out on these are that all of the core courses are the same regardless of
07:02
specialization and then each specialization has specific courses that
07:07
will be for that specialization dr. Riefler if you wouldn’t mind share a
07:12
little bit about maybe a couple of these courses or a little more info for them
07:17
as you are an environmental engineering professor yeah so the core courses
07:23
really cover some of the basics we want all our graduates to be able to do
07:28
six and planning and scheduling writing and project management
07:34
um the seminar allows us to allows all the students to get together for a class
07:41
together outside their specialty and sort of talk about some of their
07:44
experiences and really network and get to know each other a little better um in
07:51
the environmental area there’s basically three groups pollution treatment water
07:58
and wastewater treatment and then what a resources we have courses in that focus

in each of those those areas excellent thank you so much for sharing that with
08:12
us dr. Riefler so here on the next slide and you all will be able to see this
08:16
once you receive the recording you’ll see the different specialization courses
08:21
for the structural engineering things like pre-stress concrete design bridge
08:25
engineering computer-aided structural design in addition to those core courses
08:31
to dr. reform mentioned and here on the transportation tract very same thing as
08:37
you’ll be able to see these are specific to transportation engineering with
08:42
courses such as traffic parameters traffic impact studies transportation
08:47
design and so on so now I’d like to throw it back over to dr. refresh he is
08:55
going to go into the construction and engineering management specialization in
09:00
a little bit more detail dr. Riefler go ahead sure so this is the newest of our
09:08
areas in the department of civil engineering we started this program in a
09:12
face to face program about five years ago about when we part of the online
09:16
program and we we developed it basically because there was a need for this in the
09:25
industry this area has really grown dramatically over the last couple years
09:30
um one thing to point out right off the bat is that this is a in engineering a
09:37
civil engineering major when you look at different colleges that are offering
09:40
construction management a some are offered through a business
09:45
and management department which offers a different type of degree that focuses
09:53
more on the management side and the economic side things like that whereas
09:58
our program is really focused on the engineering details and is really suited
10:04
for graduates who who want to be involved in large-scale technical
10:11
projects and require that kind of expertise we’re also focused on heavy
10:18
highway projects that’s really our specialty as a department we we do a lot
10:23
of research we have a lot of expertise in specifically transportation
10:28
infrastructure so that’s that’s really where I strength lies and and this
10:35
degree focuses on on that for these large-scale infrastructure
10:39
transportation projects um this focus area is probably the least theoretical
10:47
out of all of them you know we have some theory involved in the beginning but we
10:53
really try to focus this on project-based learning and with a lot of
10:59
complications and we’ll real-world examples of things you might face when
11:05
you’re involved in this in this area as an engineer and to reflect that we we
11:12
bring in in addition to the faculty members so you know all of us have some
11:17
experience and most of us have a PE license but we spend most of our time
11:23
doing research so we like to bring in practicing engineers to help teach the
11:28
class who have who have more field experience and we find it in teaching a
11:34
class it’s a real good blend of theory and Education confidence in addition to
11:43
experiencing a field okay so the career what gone through the curriculum for the
11:51
three other tracks but the construction engineering and management track the
11:54
curriculum has the same core courses um and then there’s six courses that focus
12:00
in the construction engineering management area and I’d like to go into
12:06
those in a little more detail I’ve broken them up into three groups
12:11
although you could break them up other ways we want a real strong background in
12:17
project planning and management the first two classes listed there
12:22
project management and construction planning and scheduling all of the
12:28
disciplines take that those classes those are core classes that everybody
12:32
takes um project management classes actually is not taught the civil
12:38
engineering departments are actually taught in the IFC department the
12:41
industrial and systems engineering department and they are really experts
12:46
in optimization and um how to how to improve efficiency in in different types
12:53
of systems so they really give you a very strong theoretical background on
13:00
how to schedule events have a sequence events how to optimize processes in in
13:09
and how to model those things and then we teach a construction the civil
13:16
engineering department teaches this instruction planning and scheduling
13:20
class and that takes a lot of those theoretical concepts like critical path
13:27
management and applies it to a more civil engineering setting and we get we
13:34
get down to more specifics of how you would manage a civil engineering project
13:39
and we use a software scheduling software that you might be more likely
13:46
to encounter in a civil engineer civil engineering field like Primavera um and
13:52
then finally it’s in a construction engineering management track those
13:59
students will only take we’ll be the only ones taking this class they have
14:02
construction management class and that gets into even more detail of how you
14:07
would manage a large infrastructure project um in addition to just project
14:19
management management and scheduling we have classes in estimating costs and the
14:26
types of equipment you expect to be working with um how to deal with
14:32
contracts and bonds and overhead and things like that and then we have a
14:37
separate class just in contracts and law because that becomes a huge aspect of
14:44
this of these projects that is sort of beyond engineering but again this is
14:51
taught from civil engineering and a heavy highway perspective so you learn
14:59
how to how to write good contracts how to deal with changes in the contract as
15:04
you know construction is underway and a variety of other things related to that
15:11
and then finally because this is geared for infrastructure type projects we feel
15:22
it’s good for you guys to have a really strong background in transportation so
15:30
if you’re managing a construction project for a highway it would be good
15:34
to know why the highways was designed the way it was and why the pavement was
15:39
designed the way it was so we have to design classes in transportation and
15:45
pavement these are classes that students in the transportation track will also
15:51
take and then finally we have a class in environmental analysis transportation
15:58
systems and the part of this is is really developing an environmental
16:03
impact statement and if you guys have worked in this field you know that
16:08
that’s often the first step to many of these large infrastructure projects and
16:13
they be a real problem in some cases so it’s
16:16
good to have a strong background in that that class is also taken by our
16:20
transportation students and our environmental track students exercise I
16:29
respect you and thank you so much dr. Riefler we really appreciate your time

your particular area of expertise so stick around so ladies and gentlemen as

you’ll see from this slide here we’re going to share a little bit about what

an online student can expect with us as you heard dr. Riefler referred to you’re

going to get an innovative curriculum it’s going to focus not only on the core
17:07
areas of civil engineering as we mentioned before but each one of those
17:11
specialized areas within construction engineering and management for example
17:16
that we’re going over today the environmental engineering structural
17:21
engineering and of course transportation engineering you’re going to have great
17:26
networking and collaborative opportunities with other students so you
17:30
really are not going to feel as if you are out there you know in the ether
17:34
completely on your own wondering how do I ask a question who can I talk to can I
17:40
get a study partner or group going these are going to be opportunities that you
17:46
are going to have very very often throughout your experience with us here
17:51
at Ohio University and you’re going to make lots of great networking
17:56
connections from people and engineers all across the country some that are
18:01
international as well so you’ll have an opportunity to really create a great
18:06
network for yourself key for most engineers is the flexibility I’m sure
18:11
that Ryan will allude to that in his conversation with us and you know on
18:16
campus requirements as well you’re also going to get lots of feedback from our
18:21
faculty as dr. Riefler mentioned they all have civil engineering backgrounds
18:27
and in different specializations as well and
18:29
then of course these skills that you’re going to be learning are going to be
18:33
immediately be able to apply those to your position and the work that you’re
18:38
doing currently so it’s something that is very practical as you’re learning
18:43
you’re going to be able to apply that right away and you’re going to be
18:45
growing and you’re going to make yourself that much more valuable to your
18:50
firms so now that we’ve touched on that student experience
18:56
let me introduce one of our current students Ryan Gao Qi he will go into a

little bit more of his experience with us as a student Ryan share a little bit
19:06
of your background as well if you don’t like take it away all right well my
19:12
background I started in 2006 or my undergraduate degree in architectural
19:18
engineering technology at the University of Cincinnati graduated with that degree
19:23
in 2011 after I graduated with my degree I started working for Rao brothers green
19:30
houses in the design group as part of our institutional conservatory division
19:36
and I’ve been working there for the past five years now mainly I chose a high
19:43
university – this from a line degree like I only mentioned due to the
19:48
flexibility of the program and the the specialized degree tracks that we’ve
19:52
gone through here today currently I’m going through the construction
19:57
engineering and management special specialization that we’re focusing on
20:00
and I really feel that these the courses that were discussed are going to
20:06
strongly prepare me for my future career and future opportunities and really
20:11
another reason I chose owe you for this degree I’m living in Cincinnati so being
20:18
a resident of Ohio the financial sense made a made a little more made the
20:24
program a little more beneficial another thing that drew me towards the
20:29
program was the flexibility of the weekly schedules each semester is broken
20:33
down into week-long modules so some weeks I’m able to have a lot completed
20:37
by the middle of the week but others due to work
20:41
events I can rearrange my schedule to complete more tasks on the weekend on
20:46
the flipside if I know I have something going on in the weekend a family event
20:49
or trip or something I can kind of front-load my schoolwork so I’m finished
20:53
by the weekend so to enjoy that time with my family or friends even so there
21:00
are hit hard deadlines during the week and at the end of every week but the
21:05
flexibility of the schedules really allows you to kind of make your own
21:09
weekly schedule and work around life events as I mentioned I work as a
21:15
designer of greenhouses and conservatories I really see this degree
21:19
helping me move more into a project management role within my company where
21:24
I can combine my design background to better serve our clients contractors
21:30
people on site because we do all different sizes of greenhouses main
21:35
small large so I think the broad range of this program will allow me to
21:41
transition into any type of project that’s thrown our way
21:46
another one of my career goals is to obtain my Professional Engineers license
21:49
and I feel that with the addition of this degree with my undergrad degree and
21:55
my work experience else I think that I’ll be better equipped to sit for the
22:01
engineering training exam to work under the professional engineer for my
22:05
experience and then eventually six of the licensure exam and then also I see
22:10
the degree opening up more future career opportunity at down low road within the
22:14
construction and engineering industry
22:19
bouncing like I mentioned earlier balancing the workload of the program
22:24
along with your life responsibilities it’s something that’s constantly
22:27
evolving changing week to week as many of you probably know something can
22:32
always pop up your last minute is that can take your attention away from your
22:36
studies or from work or from life and everything like that so being that this
22:41
online program like I mentioned that flexibility is really key but you also
22:47
to keep in mind that the responsibilities of your organization
22:51
meeting your deadlines completing your assignments or
22:54
even just sitting down to watch recorded lectures both sewing with students and
22:58
one of my organizational tricks I guess is I keep an online calendar for each
23:05
course that allows me to think with my laptop my phone everywhere I go so I can
23:10
see when assignments are due discussion board posts are due projects are due
23:15
when I have exams and really planning ahead and knowing what’s coming is key
23:21
to balancing your life school work and all three of those together and then
23:28
lastly I also try to make I’ve learned to try to make available or make use of
23:34
all my available downtime as possible I’ll use my lunch hour I’ll use time
23:39
before I go to work in the morning I’ll use any time when I have downtime I’ll
23:43
be either checking something on the ‘black on the mobile app on my phone or
23:49
reading taking my textbooks with me my notes just to try to keep keep up with
23:53
everything and really making use of the downtime can save you in the long run
23:59
and then lastly one of the biggest things I recommend with this program is
24:04
to not hesitate or be afraid of reaching out to the professors it’s it’s really
24:12
up to the students to open your lines of communication and if you don’t
24:14
understand something or need for clarification the earlier you can get
24:18
your questions in the better you know and also all the other students are
24:22
balancing their life work online courses there’s plenty of resources there for
24:28
help whether it’s on the discussion board or just sending a quick email to a
24:32
couple students saying hey do you understand this really communication I
24:36
found is communication and organization are the two most important most
24:40
important aspects of keeping up to date with everything on this online program
24:46
Ryan thank you so much for that insight you make a very valid point it’s
24:52
valuable for the students to know and be organized and to be able to keep track
24:59
of everything because as you mentioned there are hard deadlines or the work due
25:04
throughout the week I wanted to ask you on average how many
25:09
hours a week do you find yourself spending doing work on each class and
25:15
does that vary now that you’ve had a couple of classes under your belt yeah
25:21
really it just I mean a lot of it depends on on the material for the week
25:26
some weeks are light with a quiz at the end of the week maybe some discussion
25:31
board posts and then for the classes and then other weeks include the discussion
25:36
board post quiz maybe an assignment the readings are always different really per
25:43
week man it’s hard to say it’s one thing I’ve never kept track of but I always
25:49
find myself I think what really helps me I think what really helps me though is
25:52
making use of all my available time and so I break kind of break it up
25:55
throughout the day and so I think I did it all in all I mean at least ten ten to
26:02
fifteen hours a week I would say okay very good advice so that people know
26:08
what they’re I’m going to be doing you know at the amount of time that is going
26:12
to require because this is intensive learning and they’re learning things
26:17
that are going to be very useful for them so it requires an effort correct
26:23
well very nice thank you so much stick around with us for a little bit Ryan as

and your experience as a student it would be very helpful

knowing you you really are like the perfect model student I tried to urge

our to do exactly what you do is find those pockets of times in your schedule

to to make makes it’s kind of like a seamless daily event you know that we
27:08
were adding to your work schedule and I just not surprised I said you can’t
27:12
quantify how much time you put in very easily because it’s just a constant flow
27:17
and they but ideally we hope our students will do
27:21
is just build it into your life and it works out with that that way so thanks
27:27
for sharing that information with us and so we did have a question we’re going to
27:33
throw this to Professor Riefler how much experience does the faculty have with
27:38
weigh at rail and transit work um yeah that’s a good question I don’t I don’t
27:46
know if we have anyone who’s got experience in that we get most of our
27:51
research funding through the Ohio Department of Transportation and there’s
27:54
not you know do a lot with rails so I can I can ask around but I suspect we
28:02
don’t have a lot of experience in that area I’ll tell you thank you for that
28:07
and then work through us if you’d like to find out more we can give you
28:12
feedback on that the student that asked that question we can give that
28:17
information out to you and then also professor Riefler could you allow
28:21
elaborate on the summit seminar and is there a thesis involved yeah so I teach
28:29
that class it’s only a one credit class we spend some time just going through
28:37
presentation techniques my objectives for that class are really to work on
28:42
your presentations so we talked about some techniques about presentations and
28:47
then each student will give two presentations
28:51
you know PowerPoint presentations delivered online with other students in
28:56
attendance the first one will be on a project that they’ve done recently at
29:01
work the second one will be on sort of a newer technology that I’ve asked them to
29:07
do a literature review on so um I wouldn’t say it’s a thesis by any means
29:16
but you do take a take a few weeks to look into something new that’s of
29:22
interest to you um the other opportunity that this gives
29:27
us is you know everybody in every discipline is
29:32
taking this class so it gives you a chance to see what other people are up
29:36
to and see what kind of projects they’ve worked on and connected with them in a
29:41
in a more personal way about what they do at work um and yeah so that’s what
29:50
that classes okay great thank you so much this is a great question and there
29:57
is a question about the fixed maximum trying to complete a degree and it is
30:03
six years so a lot of our engineers are working in excess of 45 to 50 hour work
30:08
weeks so we do highly recommend that if you’re working that much that you start
30:14
with one class see how it feels you know find your feet and then go ahead and
30:19
take additional courses in the following semester if if you feel like you can
30:24
squeeze it in as you go through the program you get more adept at doing your
30:28
scheduling and friend with mentioning you know organizations aspects of it
30:33
engineer zarg rated at so you can take things faster if you want to but the six
30:39
years is a very ample time to complete your program in case you get huge
30:43
projects and you have to slow it down a bit okay and then this one it’s asking a
30:52
Houston or she’s been 15 years since they’ve been involved in a calculus
30:58
course and may have forgotten some of the material and was the course for
31:04
structural engineering require a refresher on calculus professor Riefler
31:10
and you helped with that um yeah most most of the courses are taught with that
31:19
expectation that it’s been a while since you’ve had calculus um and you know I
31:26
don’t I’ve never I’m in the environmental area so I don’t know the
31:30
structural classes specifically but I I believe they they have some uh some
31:39
refresher in those classes when you get to a certain calculus topics
31:44
topics that require the use of calculus to solve the problem I know in the
31:49
environmental classes I teach a class that’s a transport where we use
31:52
differential equations quite a bit and you know my expectation is that you’ve
31:57
seen it before but you’ve probably forgotten the details and we go through
32:02
the details on how to work those equations again and I should say we do
32:08
have a number of students who would I may be a quarter of our students maybe
32:15
there’s more like half half it’s been an hour twenty years since they’ve had
32:22
college classes so you’re not alone of that boat for sure okay great
32:28
and we often recommend up to our students to if they’re they’d like to
32:33
brush up and there’s an easy way to do that the Khan Academy is a great online
32:39
course provider that would offer it would offer those types of courses in
32:43
calculus and differential equations I know some people just won’t even move
32:48
forward until they feel like they’re prepared to do so and then I completely
32:53
you know respect that and I know that would be rough for me to get into
32:57
something that I’ve been doing in ten years or more you know it’s great that
33:01
you can kind of go ahead and get in there and do do your work and be
33:06
successful but if you feel like you need to prep a bit so Khan Academy is a great
33:11
solution I want to be happy to share that information with you there’s
33:17
another question and it is about the seminar presentation course and
33:22
substituting that out with another course and that is not possible it is a
33:27
one semester hour course it’s actually a very practical course that will help you
33:33
in your work place if you haven’t done this type of presentation before or done
33:38
a bit of research on things that you know are going on out in the industry it
33:42
is something our faculty feels is a valuable thing for you to know and in
33:48
real if the thesis I think it’s a great switch so we do have another question
33:53
and it is our request is really a hundred percent
33:58
and as affirmative yes they are you won’t need to come to our campus at all
34:02
we would solve you’d walk in commencement if you’d like to and you’re
34:06
certainly invited to do so but everything is online including the
34:11
testing there’s proctoring software that you’ll use and you’ll learn about that
34:15
in your orientation with our program coordinator she will walk you through
34:19
what it’s going to look like online and what you’ll need to know the
34:24
expectations and just know that you can do your work you can make your own
34:29
schedule you don’t follow a schedule but we lay out to you except for the
34:33
deliverables that we have each week assignments homework and whatnot
34:37
readings that it is on your own time all
34:43
right um clicker question is there any
34:45
replacement class to the transportation class I have already taken bridge design
34:50
at Penn State and I was working on my master’s degree can it be transferred
34:55
and count towards my degree at all you and I can give us two professor Riefler
35:02
if you wouldn’t mind answering that sure yeah you can transfer up to two classes
35:11
into the degree there are some requirements for it I think you have to
35:15
to be or better it has to be within you know had to have taken it within the
35:20
last five years or something like that um but yeah we have a number of students
35:27
who have transferred credit in and to replace classes that they are required
35:32
to take your your also so the curriculum that I showed you for each of the
35:38
concentration areas you can substitute as many as do classes one of the other
35:44
concentration areas if you if you have other needs or want to sort of make up
35:52
your own sort of innovative curriculum because you may have crossover with some
35:57
of the other areas so that’s that’s definitely possible as well okay great
36:04
and Eileen I have the information you need to do the transfer
36:10
what what the school requires the work with us on that if you’d like to
36:14
transfer 40 cents and I retain two more questions
36:19
and construction management is it only oriented to highways as dr. Rieff was
36:26
stated and uh no I I probably I probably overstated that I
36:36
wanted to emphasize that was really our specialty or we have our greatest
36:41
expertise but you know the classes are also taught for sort of building large
36:51
buildings as well and other types of construction management projects um yeah
36:59
so so it is clickable to other area of construction management as well

wonderful thank you for that we appreciate them elaboration on that

because we do have engineers coming from all different backgrounds so it’s good
37:16
to know and then our last question uh this question and saying I primarily
37:22
