Eric SteinbergMeet a Member of the Online Master’s in Civil Engineering Faculty

Students pursuing an online Master of Science in Civil Engineering at Ohio University learn from professional engineers with ample experience in the field, the classroom, and even the courtroom. Meet Dr. Eric Steinberg, a registered professional engineer in Ohio and a professor in the Department of Civil Engineering at Ohio University since 1991.

A member of the American Concrete Institute and American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE), Dr. Steinberg’s research interests include precast/prestressed concrete, ultra-high-performance concrete, bridge engineering, and structural reliability. He has served as an expert witness in the field of structural engineering and holds a PhD in Structural Engineering from Michigan Technological University.

What are some of the core issues that civil engineers are working to solve?

One of the core issues faced by civil engineers today is creating sustainable communities that utilize renewable energy to reduce the carbon footprint — and in a way that is economically feasible. Another issue facing the United States is addressing our nation’s failing infrastructure through new construction and the rehabilitation of existing infrastructure.

What threat does climate change pose to our infrastructure, particularly bridges?

Climate change, particularly flooding, can damage infrastructure if the flooding is excessive. Flooding can cause abutment scour, leading to bridge collapse. Excessive flooding can cause lateral loading on bridges and damage if not properly designed to resist flooding. Long-term changes in the climate may also reduce clearances of bridges over waterways and lead to reduced shipping access.

What advice would you give to students who are interested in pursuing a career in civil engineering?

Civil engineering is the original engineering field and offers a very rewarding career, as it serves both the public and private sectors. Society is more dependent on civil engineering than any other discipline. Civil engineering is paramount to the design and construction of the buildings we live and work in, the vast transportation infrastructure we use daily to move goods and people, the provision of fresh water to our communities, and the management of wastewater from industry and individuals.

What are some of the most crucial skills that civil engineers need?

Civil engineering is a technical discipline that is technologically driven and typically requires interdisciplinary collaboration on projects. Therefore, a successful civil engineer should have a depth of knowledge in their specific field as well as the breadth of knowledge in other civil engineering disciplines, be well versed in their discipline-specific analysis and design tools, and have good oral and written communication skills.

Why should students choose to pursue the Master of Science in Civil Engineering degree from Ohio University?

The MSCE online degree from Ohio University is designed specifically to meet the needs of 21st-century civil engineering professionals.
